Maiden Falls - A Beautiful and Brutal Hike in West Clear Creek
Maiden Falls - A Beautiful and Brutal Hike in West Clear Creek
Yes, I used to have a video of this up and I took it down. I didn't really want to pack this place with a ton of people. But there have been a lot, I mean a LOT of those junk accounts online posting pictures of it with absolutely no information. The comments are enthusiastic because it's beautiful and unique. The problem is that doesn't give you any idea what you're getting into. And you're getting into a lot. When we went on this hike, we saw 3 three other people going in. 1 made it to the falls. We never saw the other two again.
So the intention of this video is to show you what you'll be getting into. If it is a little light ...

    If you read this, I have a couple of questions. What month did you do this backpack? I want to do it and very much want to miss rattlesnake season. Secondly, do you think it is safe for a 65-year-old woman to hike it alone? Finally, would you recommend a no-frame ultra-light pack or an internal frame pack? Right now I have an external pack that I haven't used in over 15 years. I am resuming hiking and want to work up to backpacking again, but I may need to upgrade my backpack, sleeping mat, and sundry other things (like sleeping mat, pillow, and misc.; I have a perfectly fine tent, trekking poles, and boots.) I plan to build up my strength and endurance over time, so it will be a little while before I go to Salt Creek. Also, do you recommend I do this trail first, or one of the wet canyonland trails? I've never done any canyonlands. Thanks! I love your videos - they inspire me!!

      Looks like this was in October. Snakes are generally out in warmer months. Not sure there is a defined season. They're just not active when it gets cold enough. Personally, I'd look into upgrading to a newer backpack. They're a lot more comfortable nowadays. And take your gear out on a much shorter hike to test it out. I don't know about you, but as I get older, I need a more comfortable mattress. When I was young, I could just sleep on the ground. Not anymore. I don't think this is a dangerous trail as far as going solo, and there are people on it, but just not a lot. So you're pretty remote. I would work up to it from shorter, less committing trails. The water is a concern, but you can ask for the most recent conditions at the backcountry desk or ranger station at Canyonlands. They should have some good conditions. Research the permit process. I found it pretty confusing for this particular hike. I want to say they release permits two times a year and you want to be ready to get permits when they come up. If you score some permits and get closer to a date to do it and have specific questions, don't hesitate to ask and I'll help if I can.

    When I was really fit (and had a looser work schedule) I used to hike Camelback 3-4 times a week, and at least one of those times would be a yo-yo, up to the summit and down to the other trailhead, then reverse course back over the summit a second time. Its a great workout and the rock formations and trail layout (with scrambling sections) are actually pretty sweet for an in-town hike. My all-around favorite in town would be hidden valley up on South Mountain, it feels more remote from the city and some of the features like the tunnel and fat man's pass are real highlights. But camelback is pretty sweet too

      I don't remember that much detail from the drive. Just that I saw a road closed sign but the road wasn't closed, then I just saw the parking from the road. The turn off from the road to the parking lot/trailhead is at 34.40483,-111.56643 if that helps. It's not tough to find. Be careful if you hike that trail in the summer though. It's a rough hike in and especially out.

    I just made the commitment to hike and explore more about 1 1/2 years ago. Young people LISTEN TO ME, do it now and not later. I regret putting off my adventures for so long. And for what? Because I was working? Years fly by quick. I waited until I was 55 with achy hips to start. That’s what made me say “what am I waiting for? “ Live while you can. We are not promised tomorrow. I now can’t wait to grab my aussies and head out usually October- April. I can only do short trails about 1-3 miles but we’re living our best life. My only regret I didn’t start years ago. Don’t wait. My fave memories are our sunset hikes together.

    Very cool and human video. I've been mentally and physically beaten down by a trail or two and it is humbling. And frustrating. I did most of my hiking in the Canadian Rockies, but I'm retired now and RV in the desert states. The joy of being able to hike without cold and wet weather gear like in Canada was quickly quashed by realizing that I had to often carry at least that much weight in water. I'm 67 now, and a few year ago section hiked the first 152 miles of the PCT. I have also done a lot of desert hiking where there is no trail to follow, and in some ways that is even more satisfying. My Golden Retriever carries his own pack and food and water for us both for the day.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona 3 дня назад

      It's no fun. What is even less fun is when your friend then goes out and does the same hike like it's no big deal. And then his friend goes out and does it like it's no big deal while adding on a free solo of Weaver Needle and a couple other peaks along the way. Then HIS friend hikes the entire route in a single day. I think I need new friends or to somehow become 25 years younger.

    • @headdown1
      @headdown1 3 дня назад

      @@JerryArizona I find at 67 my biggest problem is sleeping on a backpacking mattress. My old man back needs much better than that, and if you don't sleep you don't heal the beating that your body took that day. I can still carry a pack no problem, though I pared it down from about 34 lbs when I was younger to about 23 lbs. But without a decent night of sleep you can start to break down physically after a few days. I might do the hike down to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon with my niece next year. I did it when I was in my twenties and would love to do it again.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona 3 дня назад

      @@headdown1 it's funny because I literally just had a conversation with my 20 something daughter about how she could just get a cheap mattress at her age. This one got me to just get the permit and go, got kinda stuck on my list of things I must do and spooked off by recent events and high demand. The video was key to scoring a permit Feb 1 and knowing all the things I needed to do at the start. There are too many people in the campground but at least I knew to expect a crowd, most are friendly and that made it fun. They let groups arrive at the trailhead super early, especially as it gets warm -- no need to worry about early access, they told us to go on in if nobody is there. It seemed most people were leaving from the Caverns at 4AM and drive to the Hilltop. We did the full backpack in and out and the canyon has more shady spots than I expected, only the switchback section is difficult, but please note with this comment: I hike Grand Canyon every year the last 50 years.

      Glad you got to check it out. It's a love/hate thing with the crowds. The scenery makes it worth it, but it is definitely not a wilderness solitude experience. 50 years hiking the GC?
